Congress report 2012

Congress 2012 was opened by Mr Liam Hanratty, President CBAI at Hotel Ballina on Friday 13th July. Our guests on the evening also included Mr. Michael O'Connor, Vice-President CBAI, Mr. Stephen Gregory, President North West  Region CBAI and Cllr. Willie Nolan, Ballina town mayor.

I would like to thank sincerely our Congress Patrons, Sponsors, Committee, Tournament Directors, CBAI, Valerie and the hotel staff for making Congress 2012 a wonderful success. Special thanks to Fr. Séamus Heverin who offered Mass for deceased Bridge players and all those present in the hotel on Sunday morning.

I wish to express special thanks to the President of CBAI 2011-2012 Mr. Liam Hanratty, and the President of the North West Region Mr. Stephen Gregory who officiated and played during the weekend. We thank all those who travelled long distances to be with us, especially those who came from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Norway, Canada, USA and Turkey. There were 34.5 tables in the Mixed Pairs on Friday night, 40 in the Congress pairs on Saturday and 22 in Intermediate Pairs on Saturday, and 38 Teams on Sunday. The Open Pairs attracted 25 tables on Friday night, 10 on Saturday afternoon and 11.5 later on in the evening. There were 3.5 tables for the Novice competition on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning had 14 tables in Open Pairs and 9 tables for the afternoon.

In his closing speech, Mr. Liam Hanratty, President CBAI, complimented the Congress Committee on their high standards and for an extremely well-organized and well-run Congress. He had a special mention for the hotel and the staff who went out of their way to make his stay most memorable. He was pleasantly surprised to meet manager Valerie Horan because she was a student in GMIT during his years there as Head of Catering. Tournament Directors Fearghal O'Boyle and Mairéad Basquille as well as John and Breda Mulkearns received special mention also. He noted the record number of teams entered and complimented Fearghal and Mairéad on the high standards they have set for Tournament Directors. Liam's President's Prize will be held in Galway in September and all present were invited to attend.

Congress Teams 2012 Thirty eight teams were entered for Congress 2012 and a Swiss movement was used. The N/S half of each team remained seated throughout the competition which meant a faster progression from one round to the next. Scoring was done using Bridgemate 2 and the 7X6 board matches were completed by 17:15, in time to make the train/bus deadlines. Although the Congress program only listed prizes up to third place, because of the high entry Ballina Bridge Congress Committee decided to award a fourth prize, as done in previous years when the number of teams allowed for this.
