Present on the
stage as the 38th Annual Ballina Bridge Congress 2014 was about
to start were: Mrs Gillian Ballantyne, President North West Region
CBAI; Mrs Mary Gilvarry, Treasurer Ballina Bridge Congress; Mr. Vincent
McMahon, Congress Secretary and our National President for the 2014-2015
season, Mr. Fearghal O'Boyle.
In his opening
address of welcome, Congress President Mr. Gerry Scanlon had the
large attendance in his palm as he stood at the podium, with countenance
beaming and started with: "Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
it is my great honour and privilege to welcome you here to Ballina,
the salmon capital of Europe for our 38th annual Bridge Congress!"
Gerry continued: "My wish for you who have come to our congress is that
you all have fun meeting old and new friends and that when the congress
is over, that you reflect on an enjoyable and successful weekend and that
we see you all back here again next year." He wished Fearghal a very successful
year as President and this was echoed right throughout the hall by
a huge round of applause. Fearghal, gracious, unassuming, economical
with words, then addressed the gathering. He thanked Ballina for the
trust they placed in him many years ago when they invited him to direct
his first congress. He noted that he would have his first congress
as National President in Ballina and in his own region and his final
one in Sligo which was still in his own region. He stated that he felt
at home in Ballina and that the local congress team had done their preparations
very well. With that he declared congress 2014 open.
The Congress President
would like to thank sincerely our Congress Patrons, Sponsors, Congress
Committee, Tournament Directors, CBAI, Hotel Manager Róisín and the
hotel staff for making Congress 2014 a wonderful success. Special thanks
to Fr. Joe Cahill who offered Mass for deceased Bridge players and all
those present in the hotel on Sunday morning.
There were 30 tables
in the Mixed Pairs on Friday night, 33 in the Congress pairs on Saturday
and 23.5 in Intermediate Pairs on Saturday, and 28 Congress Teams on Sunday
as well as 16 Intermediate Teams. The event attracted 32 teams in total in
2013 and this year's new confined teams event for intermediate players was
a huge success: we had a total of 44 teams this year. The Open Pairs attracted
25 tables on Friday night, 14 on Saturday afternoon and 8 later on in the
evening. Regretfully we did not have the required number of entries to warrant
a separate Novice competition which had been scheduled for Saturday afternoon:
the novices present played in the Open Pairs and there were prizes for Best
Novice N/S and E/W. Sunday morning had 11 tables in Open Pairs and 6.5 tables
for the afternoon. Among the winners this year were a lady from Aberdeen
who was 2nd in the Mixed Pairs on Friday night and a lady from Suffolk, England
who partnered our President in the Mixed Pairs. Canada was represented at
our congress this year, as well as Panama, Turkey, Queensland and Northern
Ireland.
Ballina Bridge Congress owes much gratitude to Tournament Directors
Fearghal O'Boyle and Mairéad Basquille as well as John and Breeda
Mulkearns. Trainee TD, Mr. Huey Daly of Ballina, received special
mention also: what better training environment to work in than under
the masters. We would also like to express extreme gratitude to Eileen
O'Connor and the Sligo Bridge Clubs for their support, particularly with
provision of tables and bidding boxes for our event. (Yeats (Sligo) Bridge

Fearghal's President's Prize (Duais an Uachtaráin) will be held

Parting thoughts
No congress can be planned and run without the
support of sponsors and a capable committee on the ground, often working
behind the scenes. Those who come to play in the congress are most important
for its success and we have had very good support over the years from the
local clubs within the region as well as further afield, and especially
Northern Ireland. Our friends from BBO have added a further international
most welcome dimension. Our congress attracts some of the best players
in Ireland, including B J O'Brien and David Jackson who can hold their
own at European level any day. We congratulate all winners but it gives
us extra joy when some of our own club members feature among the prize-winners.
On Friday night, our President, Gerry Scanlon, took a prize partnering Carol
Smith from Suffolk who was visiting the town for the first time. Also on
Friday night Mary O'Sullivan and Breege Kenny (pictured left) won N/S in
an Open Pairs section while Helena Moran and Gerard Moran won E/W in the
same section. On Saturday, Jo Moran and Anne Fleming won the two-session
Intermediate Pairs competition.On Sunday, Betty Gormley (one of the founding
members of our congress) with partner Rosaleen Keohane was called to the
podium to receive a prize.
We thank the press, and especially Orla Hearns of " The Western People", George Ryan
of " The Irish Times" and John Comyn
of " The Irish Independent". The
Contract Bridge Association of Ireland
provides invaluable support and the team at North West Region
CBAI have come in behind the congress: this support is most welcome.
Our region has two annual congresses, the other held in Sligo in May: we thank the Sligo Bridge Congress
Committee for their most valuable support for our event.
